Berkeley, California is one of those cities that truly has something for EVERY type of queer woman.
Somehow this East Bay city manages to be outdoorsy, academic, artsy, vegan, nerdy, and a little crunchy all at the same time. Whether you’re a gamer, a thrift lover, an intellectual, or the kind of traveler who plans entire vacations around hiking trails, Berkeley has something for you.
The city has long been known for its progressive politics, activism, and culture of questioning the status quo. And that spirit still defines Berkeley today, helping create the welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that makes it such a great destination for lesbians.
For Foodies
Berkeley has long been considered one of California’s great food cities, and it absolutely lives up to the hype. We especially loved the city’s collection of restaurants led by female chefs and its abundance of vegetarian and vegan options. Whether you’re looking for an elevated dining experience, comfort food, or plant-based cuisine, Berkeley delivers.
Some of our favorite meals of the trip were at women-owned restaurants. One of our favorite spots was Roses on Adeline, a beautiful neighborhood restaurant known for its creative seasonal menu, warm atmosphere, and incredible cocktails. And Revival Bar + Kitchen was another highlight, serving California cuisine with locally sourced ingredients and a welcoming community feel.
For those looking to support queer-owned businesses, Tanzie’s is a must-visit. This cozy neighborhood spot serves incredibly fresh Thai-inspired dishes, including a standout breakfast menu that’s become a local favorite. The food is vibrant, flavorful, and made with obvious care.
Coffee lovers should also make time for Cafenated Coffee Co. Beyond serving excellent coffee and food, the company sources its beans from women growers around the world. By working directly with female farmers and producers, Cafenated is helping create more opportunities and economic independence for women throughout the coffee supply chain.
And if you’re a hot dog lover, don’t leave town without trying Top Dog. This local institution has been fueling students, locals, and visitors for decades and serves some of the best sausages in the Bay Area.

For Nature Lovers
One of Berkeley’s greatest strengths is how easily it blends city life with nature.
For panoramic views of the Bay, head to the Lawrence Hall of Science overlook. On a clear day, you’ll find breathtaking views of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the surrounding coastline.
If you’re looking for a hike, Tilden Regional Park is one of the East Bay’s crown jewels. The park features miles of trails, rolling hills, eucalyptus groves, redwood-covered areas, and stunning viewpoints overlooking the Bay. It’s easy to spend an entire day exploring.
For a more relaxed experience with the outdoors, Berkeley Rose Garden is a must-visit, especially in spring and summer when the flowers are in bloom. And the nearby UC Botanical Garden showcases plants from around the world, the perfect spot for a peaceful afternoon stroll.
And if you’d rather just enjoy a beautiful day stationary, grab a drink at Headlands Brewing. With plenty of outdoor seating and lots of great beers on tap, it’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon in the sun (Berkeley averages 256 sunny days per year!) .

For Intellectuals
Few places embody the dark academia aesthetic quite like Berkeley.
Home to one of the US’s top public universities, UC Berkeley, the city is filled with historic architecture, independent bookstores, cafés packed with students and professors.
One of the city’s most fascinating landmarks is Berkeley City Club, a historic women’s social club designed by pioneering architect Julia Morgan. Often referred to as the “Little Castle,” the building was created as a gathering place for women and remains one of Berkeley’s most beautiful and historically significant spaces.
Whether you’re wandering through campus, browsing bookstores, or spending an afternoon in a café, Berkeley’s intellectual energy is impossible to miss.
For Gamers & Competitors
Whether you’re looking for a unique date idea, a fun group activity, an excuse to break out your competitive side, or simply love board games and collectibles, Berkeley has plenty to offer beyond the usual sightseeing.
Start with Axeventures Axe Throwing, one of the most unexpectedly fun activities in the city. Whether you’re a first-timer or secretly training to live off-grid, it’s a great way to spend an afternoon and to get out our energy.
And because no lesbian can seem to resist a pool table, spend an evening at The BreakRoom. This local billiards hall combines pool, drinks, and a laid-back atmosphere that’s perfect for hanging out after a day of exploring.
For the gamers and collectors, don’t miss Games of Berkeley This beloved local institution has been serving Berkeley’s gaming community for decades and is packed with board games, role-playing games, collectibles, and trading cards. Whether you’re into Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, or tabletop gaming, it’s a reminder that you’re in a city where nerd culture thrives.
Afterward, spend some time exploring Telegraph Avenue, one of Berkeley’s most iconic streets. Between the bookstores, record stores, vintage shops, and street vendors, it’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon.

For Shoppers
Berkeley is a shopper’s dream, not because of luxury brands or massive malls, but because of its incredible collection of independent businesses. And one of the best things about Berkeley is how walkable many of its neighborhoods are, making supporting small businesses feel effortless.
Our favorite shopping area in the city is the charming Elmwood neighborhood. Here you’ll find beloved local businesses like Elmwood Stationers, the independent bookstore Mrs. Dalloway’s, and Five Little Monkeys, a whimsical toy store that’s great for not only kids but also fun-loving adults.
For a more eclectic vibe, Telegraph Avenue is packed with vintage stores, thrift shops, bookstores, record stores, and quirky local businesses that perfectly capture Berkeley’s creative spirit. Highlights include Moe’s Books, a legendary independent bookstore, and Amoeba Music, one of California’s most iconic record stores.
Another local area is Solano Avenue, a cute walkable shopping district. Fern’s Garden is a standout stop for curated gifts, home goods, and unique finds from local makers. And you can also treat yourself to some self-care at the nearby Sundhari Spa, which offers massages, facials, acupuncture, and Ayurvedic treatments.
Where to Stay
For a peaceful home base, we loved staying at the DoubleTree by Hilton Berkeley Marina.
Located right on the waterfront, the hotel offers beautiful marina views, easy access to walking paths, and a surprisingly tranquil atmosphere just minutes from downtown Berkeley.
The on-site restaurant is also worth a visit, whether you’re staying at the hotel or not. It’s a great spot for brunch, dinner, or sunset drinks while taking in marina views and watching the boats drift across the water. The peaceful setting feels worlds away from the city while still being just minutes from Berkeley’s best restaurants, shops, and attractions.
